Each Christmas, Ravenswood Pub hosts 100+ young men and women from Great Lakes Naval Base for Christmas dinner and a day of relaxation. These recruits are typically in the last week or two of basic training and for most, this is their first time away from home, much less first Christmas away from their loved ones.
While we would like to take the credit for such a worthwhile event, it would not be possible if we didn't have a huge amount of help from our community, both personal and business. We host a fundraiser in late fall and many local businesses donate goods and services for raffle prizes or to be used on Christmas Day. Neighborhood residents and customers donate their cellular phones for the day so that the recruits can call home. The 20th District Police Department lends a hand and a huge dose of support.
The actual Christmas Day event is an enormous undertaking that we would not be able to manage if it weren't for the many volunteers that help setup, serve, monitor, and then finally clean up after the recruits have returned to their base. Imagine the biggest Christmas Dinner you've ever prepared for family or friends, then make that for 100+ young men and women who have eaten nothing but meals from the Navy for the last couple of months. Boy, can they eat!!!!
So. . .to all of you who have helped, supported, and encouraged, we truly do thank you, as do the young men and women who visit us each year for a traditional Christmas.
